The History of Unit One ~ 3

"A Tale of Social and Sexual Depravation..."

October 1988 saw a joint production with Barton Theatre Company - The Accrington Pals. The programme raised smiles with its reference to "social and sexual depravation"... It was, of course, a typo but, given the behaviour of some of the cast, many thought it was more appropriate than the intended "deprivation".

Home Sweet Home

After a brief stint at the Salford Art Gallery & Museum, Unit One Theatre Company found a permanent home at St Clements Church Hall, Ordsall. Members of the church's own theatre company helped make the props for The Fosdyke Saga - Bill Tidy's Comic strip brought to life.

At the end of 1989, Unit One joined forces with St Clement's Players for their ever popular Christmas pantomime.

Highlights at St Clements included: One For The Road (for which our ex-chairman had to sacrifice the entire contents of his living room to be used as a set), Pass The Butler by Monty Python's Eric Idle and and Willy Russell's Educating Rita, played in the round.

Curtain Call

At the end of the 1989-90 season, a lull in membership led Unit One Theatre Company to merge with Barton Theatre Company, taking on the Barton name.

Many of Unit One's members can still be seen on stage today; not only with Barton Theatre Company, but also with All Saints Musical Productions, Bolton Little Theatre, Edgefold Players, Patricroft Players, Lancaster Footlights and SPADES.
